The Story of Horses, Heroes, and Hope: Making Dreams Come True in Flagstaff
Here in Flagstaff, dreams don’t just stay in our hearts — they come to life in the most inspiring ways. Today, I’m excited to share with you the incredible story of Horses, Heroes, and Hope, an equine therapy program born from one woman’s dream.
One Woman’s Dream: Moran Henn and Horses, Heroes, and Hope
It all started with Moran Henn, a dear friend of mine and the program director for Horses, Heroes, and Hope. Moran had been living in a beautiful rental property with her own horses and others, but something inside her urged for more. She had a vision, one that combined the majestic energy of horses with the healing needs of people facing challenges. As her realtor, I had the honor of being a part of her journey toward making that dream a reality.
When I asked Moran about her vision, she shared, "My dream was to combine the presence and the amazing energy of animals, especially horses, with the needs of people. People are struggling—for whatever reasons. Everybody has their own life journey. But I saw what horses gave to me, my family, and the people I connected with. I really wanted to do that on a larger scale."
Finding the Perfect Property
The next step was finding a home that could bring Moran’s vision to life. Then, the perfect property appeared: one with acreage, horse pens, shelters, an arena, and access to trails and forests. But there was an extraordinary twist.
When Moran and I visited the property, we noticed a logo with the name "Horses, Heroes, and Hope." Curious, we discovered it belonged to a nonprofit offering equine-assisted learning and therapy for veterans and their families. The organization was being closed because the property was for sale. It was clear — this wasn’t just a property for Moran; it was the continuation of a mission she had long dreamed of starting.
Moran recounted, "We met with the property owners and the organization’s founder, Greg Hughes. Everyone was excited. It was a perfect match — I wanted the property, and I wanted to keep their vision alive. The dream lives on."
Transformative Healing with Horses
Today, Horses, Heroes, and Hope serves veterans and their families, while welcoming others seeking grounding and peace. The program offers a variety of experiences from riding sessions, groundwork with horses, mucking therapy (cleaning pens and enjoying the meditative benefits of the outdoors), to brushing and bonding with the horses.
Moran explained, "We just keep the gate open. People can come brush the horses, walk around, or simply be present. It’s incredibly grounding for many of them."
The program’s impact is deeply heartfelt, bringing healing, connection, and hope to those who need it most.
